International Women's Day

Personally, I celebrate how awesome it is to be a female everyday. Today however, is the internationally recognized day. Today is International Women's Day!

Today is the perfect day to look at how far we've come as a gender. 100 plus years ago there were so many things we were told we couldn't do. We couldn't vote, couldn't fight in wars, couldn't secure jobs. There was so many social stigmas holding us back from our true potential. But look at where we are today. Think off all the things we've proved we can do. Women have done what men have said was impossible. We've found cures to illnesses, fought for our country, journeyed into space and have even run for president. The possibilities continue to become endless.

As women (Or girls), there is soft yet fierce nature about us. We handle adversity with grace and poise. We master the impossible with a smile and a hair flip.We are a  gentle tempest. That's what makes us so powerful.

Always, always be proud to be a girl. Never let anyone tell you make you feel inferior. You have so many reasons to be proud of being a girl and later, being a woman. It's no secret that we can make a change in the world but you don't have to wait and watch others do it. Some of you reading this right may be young girls. Let me tell you, you're never too young to make a change in the world. Start now, the future depends on you. One day you will be the leaders of mighty generation of women.

The Lonely Hearts Club

On Valentine's Day there are two types of girls : those who are getting showered with flowers and worshiped by their adoring boyfriends and those who are moping around the house in pajamas all day and stuffing their face with chocolate while watching Nicholas Sparks films. Some of us lucky gals fit in the first category, the rest of us are forced to join the other. If you happen to fall into the first category, I envy you. If not, join the club, the Lonely Hearts Club.

Let's be honest girls, being single on Valentine's Day is not fun. Especially when you're a teenage girl on Valentine's Day. It's not easy walking around school with your head head high when every other girls seems to be getting chocolates and roses from a special guy and here you are empty handed and lonely. And then there's that voice in your head that says "This is just a reminder of how much nobody likes me. I'll never have anyone special in my life." If you've ever felt this way, you are not alone. You're talking to the girl of V- Day blues.

It's very easy to feel like no one loves you when you don't have a  boyfriend on Valentine's Day. This couldn't be any further from the truth. Girls, you don't need a boyfriend to feel loved. There's always going to be people who love you. There's friends and there's family and these people will always be there for you. So if you're feeling down about not having a boyfriend, spend some time with your family and friends. It'll make your Valentine's blues go away!

Deadly Comparisons

"Why can't  I  look like her?" It's a question that every girl or woman has asked at least once in a life time.  As small girls our parents tells us that we're the prettiest things in the world but as we grow older and encounter other girls, our thinking seems to change. We begin to feel unsatisfied with our appearance and constantly dwell on the things we lack. This, ladies, is where all girls go wrong.

Society has taught young girls that your value lies in your physical appearance. That you are only as good as you are pretty. That you must meet a certain standard of beauty in order to be considered desirable or likable. And it doesn't help that there are certain symbols and representations of these standards such as supermodels, actresses and pop-stars. We look at these women as say : "Wow, look at her. She's gorgeous. But look at me. I'm plain, too fat, too many freckles. I'm just not good enough. Why can't I look like her?"

The biggest mistake we make as girls is comparing ourselves to others, We're constantly looking at the next girl and beating ourselves us because we lack something that she has. Every time we do this we're killing a little bit of our self esteem. One comparison at a time.

Comparisons are very easy to make and we are taught to make them at young ages. It's very easy to point out what we don't have. But we have to remember that if we always compare ourselves to others, we'll never feel good enough. Everyone is different. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. So what if you don't look like the girls on the front cover of Seventeen Magazine? So what if you're not as tall as that runway model? So what if you have a few extra curves? You are you. A one of a kind. An original. You're prefect in your own way.

I know it might be hard. We all do it. I'm not totally satisfied with my physical appearance. I make comparisons every now and then and I drop a self loathing comment almost every day. But you know what? It takes time to become comfortable in your own skin and it's usually something that doesn't happen during the time that were girls or young women. Being happy with who you are won't happen over night. It's a process but it will happen eventually.

You don't have to live up to the standard of beauty the world's created. Make your own.

Long Live The Girl!

In our society, there's always been the ever going gender battle. "Boys are better than girls." or "Girls are better than boys." are the heated debates of our childhoods and even as we grow older and eliminate the immature conversation, the dispute seems to go on and on, even through adult life.

Which gender is the more superior? Who cares? It doesn't even matter.! What matters is embracing and loving the gender that God gave you. Women may be the minority gender in the world but there are endless reasons to enjoy being a girl. I can't even begin to list them all. There's just something so enchanting about being a girl and I feel as many of us have grown up, we've forgotten that feeling of enchantment.

Sooo, now we get into the purpose of this blog!

Here on Girl Almighty( this lovely blog that you are current viewing) The discussion thrives on all things girl, that includes the good bad and ugly. Here on Girl Almighty, we acknowledge our strengths and address our weaknesses. But most importantly, we celebrate what it truly means to be a girl!!!! So come along, don't be shy and get out your glasses (non- alcoholic beverages of course!). Let's have a toast to us, to being girls! Because, let's be honest, we're actually pretty awesome.
